Personal Essay Workshop

January 19, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

| $320.00

You’ve got a story, a topic to explore, an observation, a memory and, best of all, a completely distinctive point of view—yours. In this course we will explore ways convert the messiness of life into an essay that impacts readers with the same vigor and vitality as our lived experiences have affected us. For our stories to be interesting to a reader, they must connect the truth we discover about ourselves with a larger truth. We will work literary tools such as voice, structure, scenic details, characters and narrative persona to write vivid kick-ass essays. We’ll read and discuss a variety of writers such as Zadie Smith, Joan Didion, Meghan Daum, Jo Ann Beard, Charlie Baxter, James Baldwin and others. Our weekly exercises will illustrate and explore craft topics while generating new work and creating opportunities to go deeper. Our time together will culminate in a workshop of a longer piece from each member of the class. New and seasoned writers are welcome.
